Yellowstone Park Quick Facts
Currency: United States Dollars
On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, visitors have unparalleled opportunities to observe wildlife in an intact ecosystem, explore geothermal areas that contain about half the world’s active geysers, and view geologic wonders like the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.
Yellowstone National Park is larger than the states Rhode Island and Delaware.
Yellowstone National Park is in the northwest region of the United States.
Best Time To visit
The best months to visit Yellowstone are April, September, and October. These “off season” months provide more chances to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife and enjoy thinner crowds. Bears emerge from hibernation between March and April, migrating birds arrive just before May, and the elk rut begins mid-September.
Is Yellowstone National Park Safe?
Despite the signs around the park warning not to get too close to these giants, many tourists have been charged or gored by bison in this National Park. There are also bear attacks every year in Yellowstone. Dangerous animals in Yellowstone include Bison, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Wolves, and more.
To Do In Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone has something for everyone. Whether you delight in the challenge of a strenuous hike or prefer to sit quietly and watch the sunset, the park offers a great diversity of activities for you to enjoy.
Explore Thermal Basins
One of the greatest experiences in Yellowstone is witnessing the geologic wonders of the park. Topping the list of geologic wonders are hydrothermal features: hot springs, mudpots, fumaroles, and geysers. Well over 10,000 different hydrothermal features have been estimated to be active within the park.
Did you know that 60% of the world’s hot springs and geysers are inside Yellowstone? That’s how many there are. The most photographed thermal feature in the park is the Grand Prismatic Hot Spring. It’s bigger than a football field and its size makes it the third largest spring in the entire world. But as much as the size is impressive, the bright colors are stunning. The spring is blue in the middle with layers of orange, yellow and green around it.
Ski/Snowboard/Snowshoe
Yellowstone has miles of trails for the adventurous skier and snowshoer. Though track is set only on a few trails, all unplowed roads and trails are open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Whether you are skiing a groomed trail in a developed area or venturing into the backcountry, remember that you are traveling in wilderness with all its dangers: unpredictable wildlife, changing weather conditions, hydrothermal areas, deep snow, open streams, and avalanches. Your safety is not guaranteed. Be prepared for any situation and know the limits of your ability.
Hike
Boiling geysers. Cascading waterfalls. Deeply carved canyons. Wildlife at every turn. One of the best ways to see the beauty in Yellowstone National Park and avoid crowds is by taking a hike.
White-Water Raft
Very often rafting is the highlight of any vacation to Yellowstone. This is in part because of the three great rivers that run through the national park’s ecosystem. The Gallatin, Snake, and Yellowstone Rivers along with their many tributaries are the heart pumping pathways of this magical environment. They course through some of the most beautiful parts of the park and surrounding valleys. There vital place in this ecosystem makes them centers of geologic history, organic prosperity, wildlife activity, and exploratory travel.
